COAS General Asim Munir Calls for Unity Against Extremism
Islamabad – Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir has reiterated the Pakistan Army’s commitment to combating extremist ideologies, particularly the phenomenon he referred to as ‘Fitna-tul-Khawarij.’ Addressing students from universities across the country, General Munir emphasized that the armed forces continue to fight against these elements on a daily basis and do not subscribe to their self-proclaimed religious interpretations.
The speech, which took place on February 12, was shared by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on social media on February 16. The three-minute, ten-second video highlighted key remarks from the Army Chief regarding Pakistan’s resilience against extremism and the role of the youth in shaping a progressive future.
State’s Stance on Extremist Surrender
General Munir expressed that those who lay down their arms and surrender to the state may expect leniency, in accordance with religious teachings. Citing Islamic principles, he stated, “Allah has provided a way for those who repent before they are captured. If they submit and surrender, they should know that Allah is Most Forgiving and Merciful.”
This statement aligns with Pakistan’s broader counterterrorism strategy, which has often included the possibility of reintegration for militants who renounce violence and accept the writ of the state.

He expressed personal satisfaction in engaging with young minds, emphasizing that such interactions reaffirm his belief in the country’s secure future. “Our foremost priority is Pakistanism,” he declared, adding that the Army is resolute in its battle against groups that distort Islam for their own agendas. “We will never allow such misguided factions to impose their values on our country.”

Highlighting the Army’s internal cohesion, General Munir remarked, “We fight as comrades. In the battlefield, there is no distinction of Sindhi, Punjabi, Baloch, or Pashtun—we fight together as Pakistanis.”
He strongly condemned extremist groups, stating that their actions are not in accordance with Islamic teachings but rather a distortion of religion. Referring to Quranic verses, he reiterated that such groups spread chaos and destruction and that stern actions against them are justified.
